Hybrid technology is all the rage in the automotive industry nowadays, with the world’s biggest car manufacturers in fierce competition against each other in developing the best hybrid car for millions of consumers. Toyota Japan is one of the biggest players and is considered a pioneer with the Prius, the first mass-produced hybrid car, introduced in 1997. Since then Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) has developed the technology and incorporated it in several of its models, the newest of which are the Auris, Yaris, Camry, RAV4, and Highlander. In 2012, TMC had announced that the brand plans to launch twenty new hybrid models by the end of the year 2015. There are currently 19 hybrid passenger car models and one plug-in hybrid in TMC’s lineup. These are available in 80 countries and regions. Hybrid benefits With the rising concerns on environmental safety and conservation of resources, consumers are turning towards new technologies that use the least amount of energy and resources. Hybrid engines make use of both gas and electricity as energy source, so it doesn’t need as much fuel as other non-hybrid cars. This results to less fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. Since its first mass-produced Prius hybrid release in 1997, TMC models have saved around eleven million kiloliters of gas and reduced emissions by approximately thirty million tons worldwide. A massive feat, and one that TMC continues to do with its newest hybrid models. Another development in eco-friendly cars is the creation of all-electric vehicles, but these aren’t as widely distributed as hybrids. Lucrative market Percentage-wise, the biggest buyers of and advocates of hybrid vehicles are the Japanese themselves, with almost forty percent of TMC sales being hybrids. Toyota Japan has sold more than two million hybrid units as of October 2012. The U.S. automotive market is the largest and fastest-growing for hybrid cars, with the Prius liftback as its bestseller. Fourteen percent, or around 4.6 million units, of TMC’s global sales are comprised of their hybrid models. Earth-friendly cars The Camry, America’s favorite car, is now hybridized with a 156-horsepowerm 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder Atkinson-cycle engine. Used with the electric motor, the total horsepower leaps up to 200. The new Camry has also been given recognition as a Top Safety Pick for 2013 by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and it has the highest-possible side crash test rating in its class. Toyota Japan also has its own lineup of hybrid models for the Japanese Domestic Market. These are the Estima Hybrid (MPV), Alphard Hybrid (luxury MPV), Toyota Harrier SUV, Toyota Sai sedan, and the new Toyota Crown Hybrid sedan. The Crown line, first introduced in 1955, has the honor of being the longest-running nameplate for a passenger car. Now on its fourteenth generation with the new Crown Royal and Crown Athlete variants, the Crown remains a classic beauty, and it has become more earth-friendly too. Hybrid car enthusiasts and environmentalists will surely hold TMC to its word. With twenty new hybrid models to look forward to, the world is definitely looking greener. Toyota Japan is doing its part, and the other automotive companies should follow suit, too.
