Proofreading and editing are crucial components of any writer's work. Many writers submit their work to professional proofreaders and editors. This may simply be because they are too busy or it may be because they don't have the necessary skills to proofread their own work to the standard required. Even if you never become someone who can proofread or edit professionally, the skills involved are well worth learning, especially if you are a writer that often has to submit work to somebody else. You may only want to submit articles to a directory to help promote your online business but proofreading and editing your work can save both time and money during the submission process. If your work is riddled with errors, from spelling mistakes and grammatical errors to more specific things that might vary from publication to publication, the chances are that your submission will not be accepted before you correct them all. This can take up valuable time as you first address the problems and then re-submit and wait for the review process to go through its motions. The first thing you should do before you even begin to tackle a piece of work is to review the submission rules of the directory or publication where you intend to post. This can save lots of time later if you are fully aware of the "do's" and "don'ts before you get started. Take your time - If you have time, then use every minute of it before you submit your writing. If you can return to your work and proofread it a day or so later, it is very likely that any errors and editing possibilities will jump right out at you! Spelling - It's not a good idea to rely solely on a spell checker tool (although you should certainly employ one as well). Some words have multiple meanings and even multiple spellings, so it's important to know you have the right one for the right place. If you are using a spell check system, make sure you have it set up for the correct region. If you are submitting work to a UK market, ideally you want to submit with UK spelling. The same applies if you are submitting to the United States or other countries. Editing - Sometimes, editing may simply involve altering a word or two or perhaps adding or taking away some punctuation. There are other times, however, when the editing process can be brutal and you may end up with a very different piece of work than the one you started with. If you have allowed your work to brew before applying your proofreading and editing techniques, your quest is likely to be much clearer and your finished product, much better!
