News of raises for the top dogs at Nova Scotia Power and its parentEmera offended and frustrated opposition party leaders Thursday,while Premier Darrell Dexter took it in stride. The $1.15 million in compensation for Nova Scotia Power presidentRob Bennett last year was up 23 per cent from the previous year.Emera president Chris Huskilson got a 20 per cent hike in basesalary to $747,115, while his total compensation was up seven percent to $3 million. The figures, contained in the companies" informationcirculars posted Thursday, became public two days after Nova ScotiaPower said it needs a three per cent rate increase next year andanother three per cent the year after. Stephen McNeil, leader of the official Opposition Liberals, saidthe executives" raises were unacceptable. "It"s absolutely offensive," McNeil said. "How can anybody justify that, and go back to Nova Scotiaratepayers and say ‘We"re looking for more money"and use some flimsy excuse that it has something to do with cost ofenergy or something to do with running their operation?" McNeil said he wants an audit of Nova Scotia Power to ensure thecompany has found internal savings before asking customers to paymore. Progressive Conservative Leader Jamie Baillie noted that the chiefexecutive officer of Hydro-Quebec, a much larger utility than NovaScotia Power, makes half what Bennett does. "Like all Nova Scotians, I find it extremely frustrating thatat a time when power rates are skyrocketing, that so are theexecutive salaries at Nova Scotia Power," Baillie said. Premier Darrell Dexter said he understands that the power companyhas reduced the number of its executives, leaving the remainingones with more responsibilities. And he said the total compensationfor executives is down. "The overall reduction in the size of the executive, andtherefore what they"re paid, is a good thing," Dextersaid. "We want to encourage them to become moreefficient." Dexter said the provincial Utility and Review Board will be able toreview the responsibilities of Nova Scotia Power"sexecutives. He also said executive bonuses weren"t part of theutility"s rate filing last year, and won"t be in thenext two years. The review board regulates Nova Scotia Power but not Emera.
