A parenting coordinator may be assigned if the parents are not able to agree over a parenting plan for the child during a divorce proceeding. 10 states in the US have a law for parenting coordinators as of May 2011. These states are Colorado, Idaho, Louisiana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Massachusetts and Florida. Most of these states mention that the court may order a parenting plan to the parents. The coordinators may not be able to change this plan. He/she may only be able to make minor changes to the plan. A parent may be able to file a petition in court to sort out custody and visitation issues. In most cases, a lawyer may not be required if the parents agree to give their time and work towards sorting the issues. However, with custody and visitation, it is always better to have a lawyer. • Taking complaints from the parents about one another and taking decisions to be followed by both of them
• When the parents are not in agreement, taking decisions about a non urgent medical condition of the child.
• Report any kind of abuse to child protective services There are many more rights of the parenting coordinator. If the parents do not agree with these decisions, they can request the court to decide on any disputed issues. They can also request the court to appoint a new parenting coordinator but to do so; they will have to give a valid reason to remove the current coordinator.
