The 2012 Toyota Corolla is still the world’s number one car, as shown by worldwide sales data for the year 2012. For the past years Toyota has been on the receiving end of negative comments regarding the Corolla line: the cars may be reliable, but the styling has become boring, making the cars bland. Other models are catching up and they definitely look better than the Corolla. Does Toyota have any bright ideas to make them stay on top? Before we ponder on the Corolla’s future, here are the other models that made it to the 2012 bestseller list. The sales of the Auris, Matrix, and Rumion variants helped seal the Corolla’s victory just enough to keep the throne out of the reach of the Ford Focus. The Focus is a formidable opponent because it has the backing of its station wagon and hatchback versions it addition to its standard sedan. The Corolla marquee was able to sell 1,097,132 sales in 2012 while the Focus logged in 1,036,683 sold units. A big part of Ford’s sales went to the Chinese market, which boycotted all things Japanese—their cars most especially—following a territorial dispute. In a way, Ford owes its second-place win to the Jap-hating Chinese. Moving on, we have the impressive Hyundai Elantra at third place with 829,192 total worldwide sales for 2012. The Korean carmaker is truly making it big in the industry; motoring enthusiasts are sure to be looking forward to Hyundai’s new releases for the upcoming 2014 model year. The other models that followed the 2012 Toyota Corolla in the top ten list are the Toyota Camry (also known as the Toyota Aurion, the Chinese and Russian version of the Camry), Ford’s F-Series, the Chevrolet Cruze, the Volkswagen Passat, the Nissan Tiida (also known as the Versa and Sunny in other markets), Volkswagen’s Golf, and bringing up the rear is the Ford Fiesta. Any one of those models could take the crown away from the Corolla in the coming months, so what’s Toyota to do? The company may have seen it coming so they decided to come up with something that would bring the excitement back to having a Corolla. It is, after all, the world’s best-loved car, and there are many people who have been looking up to Corollas since they first experienced riding in one. Perhaps it’s time to say goodbye to the 2012 Toyota Corolla and say hello to something new. That “something new” was unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2013. Enter the Toyota Corolla Furia, a concept car that is a total and major makeover from the previous Corolla models. The name itself sounds like it’s in a state of victorious fury, and the bright fiery orange color suits its name perfectly. It looks like a vigorous, powerful blaze, a phoenix rising from the ashes of Corolla dullness. It’s indeed a welcome change from the soft and bland designs of the previous generations. The new Furia concept is a harbinger of a new design philosophy Toyota will use in the coming years: Iconic Dynamism. The result is a more aggressive and confident take on style, making the model appeal to youthful buyers. For now, though, the 2012 Toyota Corolla is here and is ready to go when you are.
