I am still a newbie at freelance work, mostly writing but also web related tasks like content managing and editing. So when I landed an ongoing role as an editorial assistant I was ecstatic, it is a totally different life you lead when you don't know where the next dollar is coming from and this represented a modicum of security - or at least a small one. With the unforeseen difficulties on the first day the job was doomed to be a short one and no apology it would seem could make up for a slow internet connection to someone living in a world much faster than this. After a week the job was no longer mine the reasons given were the slow connect and interestingly enough artistic differences. I could understand the first (which has now been remedied) but the second made me pause to think. I will not divulge the name or type of the website here but I found the artistic differences a tad premature given the small amount of time and zero feedback I had been given on the work completed. But maybe that's just the way it is in a world where people are paid as little as 50 cents an hour. Where the haves exploit the have nots in a whole new way with outrageous demands for perfection in skills that would take years to acquire and demand large salaries in the Western world. But in the cyber world $100 remuneration for a 40 hour week is scooped up by those that are starving, again the gap widens and the understanding of poverty seems to have left the building. For the same employers these people, and I am now one, are faceless and unknown simply a resource to be tapped at low rates to generate high profits. And people will complete this work and put up with these inhuman rates because sometimes it is the difference between starvation and providing a bowl of rice for their families one meal for that day. I have found other contracts now and have licked the temporary wound of this early rejection. Living here I have learned that a slow Internet is not a tragedy, a SKYPE call that won't connect is not the end of the world or if the power goes out a candle is enough to light my way in the dark. The tragedy here is human not technological, its the 2 year old child near the corner of my street obviously suffering from malnutrition, its the stench of the festering sewerage in open drains where children play or the dog with no fur dragging its back legs starving, blind and suffering with no humane solution around. I can no longer relate to a world that is blind to this suffering and if living here to work with these people to create positive change excludes me from working with the impatient, arrogant and exploitative then I guess that is the way it will be. It is a choice than I am happy with as for now I don't need things just peace of mind and freelance work helps me get there. buy an assessment
