A pool basically needs three accessories to make it a fit place to bathe and swim – pumps, filters and heaters. These are the three accessories that fill/remove water from the pool, clean the water and keep it at an optimum bathing temperature. The importance of filters in a pool can in no way be neglected. Pool filters are absolutely essential for a clean and healthy swimming pool. How does it works and what does it do? The filter works in tandem with the pump. It is the pump that sucks water from or pushes water through the filter. The pump also releases chemicals in the water through the filtration mechanism to maintain the cleanliness of the water. As the name suggests, the filter removes all the debris from the water. Different types of filters remove different types of debris. What are the different types of filters? There are three types of filtration systems, used for different purposes and using different materials and mechanisms for filtration. The three materials are: Sand Cartridge Diatomaceous Earth (DE) The major differences between the three types of filters are the particle size that they filter out, the operational and maintenance cost incurred by each, the complexity of their functionalities and the initial set-up cost. What are my options? While choosing a filter, the preferences and kind of use matter most. The frequency of use (seasonal, round the year, etc.) and the volume of the water in the pool might be other contributing factors to the selection of a pool filter. Depending on what the customer wants, the following options are available. Sand This is the most popular, cheapest and easiest to install. It does take a considerable amount of space, though. Nevertheless, that is covered up for by its effectiveness and efficiency. It can remove quite a lot of dirt, but not very small particles. It is also prone to clogging and requires regular cleaning. Cartridge These types of filters feature a removable cartridge. They require regular cartridge cleaning or replacement and are costlier to operate and maintain. But they can clean small particles too. Diatomaceous Earth (DE) This is the least popular but the most effective filtration mechanism available. It cleans up the smallest of particles; of size as small as 3 microns. However, this effectiveness comes at a price because they are fairly costly and complex to install, operate and maintain.
