Why motion-sensing consoles of Sony and Microsoft won't make history?

Science & Technology
Home video gaming systems like Sega Consoles created a golden history when we play retro games on our friend’s home. With the passage of time, we moved forward into the age of information technology and 21st Century is proved to be the era of technology where the arena of console gaming is developing more and more. In the late 20th Century, our so-called gaming world took a large step ahead by introducing Nintendo Gameboy which is said to be the first handheld gaming console of the world. Today, the player can move around the console to play rather than sitting for long hours in the couch at the same position due to rapid advancement in technology of gaming world.

How motion sensing came in the world of gaming? Nintendo was the first who adapted the method of motion-sensing technology in their gaming idea by introducing Nintendo Wii console in the international market. If you buy Nintendo Wii Console, you will get Nintendo Wii controller and the sensor bar which is used to pick up the signals through your gestures while playing the game. The controller emits the signals by detecting the movement of player and the character in the video game reacts accordingly.

The infrared is a type of wireless communication which is used in TV remote controls and this is used by the sensor bar and the controllers. Nintendo Wii controller emits two infrared beams and sensor bar picks the same. This wireless information is transmitted to console via Bluetooth signals. Afterwards, the character in the video game acts according to the movements of the player in front of the console. All these things are done with the infrared beams which are transmitted from the remote to the infrared bar. The motion sensing is said to be very innovative technology used in modern video games.

Microsoft and Sony Vs Nintendo Both Microsoft and Sony are the jealous haters of Nintendo and both of them are not using the technology of Nintendo. In fact, they came into limelight by launching motion sensing add-ons and they designed and introduced the newer versions of their consoles. Sony unveils PlayStation Move add-on on September 2010 for its PlayStation 3 and later on November 2010, Microsoft introduced Kinect add-on for its Xbox 3. In order to give life-like experience to the player, both Nintendo Wii and PlayStation Move leverage the benefits of controller. But Microsoft’s Kinect comes with complete voice recognition and motion sensing in order to avoid the use of controller and other add-ons. Microsoft was well tried to give a futuristic touch with a fantastic revolutionary beginning and both Sony and Microsoft were adapted the efficient way to stay unmatched with the technology of Nintendo.

Both Sony and Microsoft were tried to stay away from the competition of Nintendo but they wrongly generated lots of questions against their new add-ons. Initially, the Kinect was the bestseller just like hotcakes but some critical issues occurred from the users. First problem the users experience is the long interval between the actual movement of player in real time and the movement of character in the game controlled by them. Another major issue is the sensor bar which has constant replacement due to which single player have to stay 6 feet away from Kinect sensor and multiple players have to stay 8 feet away from the sensor. Hence, small rooms are not perfect to enjoy the full power of motion sensing gaming. In addition, constant and excellent lighting is required by the Kinect in order to detect the movements of player efficiently. Sometimes full enjoyment cannot be gained in lighted rooms, especially when it comes to play horror games.

On the contrary, PlayStation Move is inspired from the idea of Nintendo. Hence it launches the sensor named as PlayStation Eye which only detects the controller’s movement instead of player’s movement in front of the sensor. Though the PlayStation Eye depends upon the proper lighting conditions in order to detect the movement of player, it is capable to record the movements at 60 frames per second rather than 30 frames per second that Kinect enables. But PlayStation Move still has issues relating to calibration regardless of double fps offered as compared to Kinect. When it comes to play fast action games like Call of Duty and others, the players face problems relating to calibration.

Facts you may know about Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Wii 1.Microsoft Xbox was the world’s first console which provides full HDTV support. 2.PlayStation 2 was the world’s first console with better graphics capability as compared to modern PCs of that era. 3.Ninetendo N64 came into existence for the first time when Silicon Graphics Inc. (computer graphics system maker) was introduced the technology of gaming hardware. 4.PlayStation 2 is the first DVD technology user in video gaming. 5.Nintendo GameBoy was voted as bestseller of game system ever i.e. above 100 million systems sold in the world. 6.PlayStation from Sony was said to be first CD-based add-on of Super Nintendo. Sony developed PlayStation as its own machine due to some issues and licensing problems. 7.The proprietary disc of Nintendo GameCube held 1.5GB data which is 190 times more than game cartridge of N64.

In Conclusion Although Sony and Microsoft successfully launched motion-sensing devices of their own versions, they failed to beat Nintendo in terms of sales of their units because they were in a hurry in making their units which resulted in irritating issues from the gamers. With having the gaming consoles of modern technology, you can get the best experience of gaming that makes you feel like the part of the game. The sensor fusion algorithms work on gaming sensor which can be processed and applied in the application. The future design of gaming sensors are designed at the size of a postage stamp. With its smallest size, the orientation tracking become easy and smoother. With PC-based algorithms, the orientation tracking works on zero latency in the real time.
