When it comes to importing used cars, Ugandans need not worry because there are import regulations that can serve as a guide for those who are interested to buy pre-owned cars from Japan. The regulations also contain information on the import process so buyers will know what their cars will have to go through before these are cleared upon arrival at the Port of Mombasa, where all shipments to Uganda arrive. The import regulations for Uganda are easy to follow. Here are the frequently asked questions. What is the minimum or maximum age of imported cars in Uganda? Vehicles of any age may be imported into Uganda, as long as these are in good working condition. There are some vehicle models that remain sturdy and reliable even if these are already ten years old or more. Older models are more inexpensive than newer releases, but it doesn’t mean that they lack quality. In addition, though some pre-owned cars being sold in Japan are already more than five to ten years old, these have low mileage or have not been extensively used by their former owners. You can easily find good quality cars of any age from Japanese exporters. Should import cars be left-hand drive or right-hand drive? Uganda drives on the left hand side of the road and therefore should have right-hand drive vehicles, but actually, both left- and right-hand drive vehicles may be imported into Uganda. This means that when it comes to buying used cars, Ugandans have more choices, as they can select from both left- and right-hand drive cars for sale. What is the pre-shipment inspection? The pre-shipment inspection is a government requirement for all vehicles imported from other countries. It is a road worthiness inspection that verifies if a car about to be shipped to Uganda is properly working, has genuine mileage, and has no major structural damage, especially to the chassis. The inspection is done to see if the vehicle meets the standards set by the Uganda National Bureau of Standards. Who will conduct the inspection? The testing is conducted by a government-appointed inspection center. For Uganda, the process is carried out by the Japan Export Vehicle Inspection Center, or JEVIC. JEVIC will also issue the export certificates for vehicles that have passed the inspection. This certificate is one of the required documents for import vehicles. What will be inspected? For used cars in Uganda, the following are just some of the parts and mechanisms that will be inspected: safety features such as locking and braking mechanisms, safety belts, and stability control; mechanical operations such as the accuracy of the odometer and instrument panel gauges, wipers, engine functionality, steering, exhaust, and lighting among others; and even the tires are checked to see if these are suitable for Uganda. Chlorofluorocarbons are also removed during inspection, which is another requirement for pre-owned cars entering the country. In all of these import regulations, the only thing that Ugandans will really have to do is to select a car. JEVIC and the exporters will do the rest, from inspection to shipping and clearing. It’s really very easy to import used cars in Uganda, and the vehicle choices are endless.
