Many teachers who are considering enrolling in a TEFL course properly wonder about the time commitment required. They want to know exactly how they will be able to schedule the coursework in with their current jobs or other commitments. Because the required coursework differs between TEFL certification providers, the first question to decide is which provider you will choose. If you want to have the broadest, most respected credentials, then you should choose either the Cambridge Celta or the Trinity CertTesol. These certifications are as respected in the world of TEFL as the respective university degrees are respected in the academic and business world at large. Alternately, you can enroll in equivalent courses that match the curriculum, if not the supervision of the two main choices. It is a recommended that you avoid any watered-down courses, or courses offered by teacher’s associations. These will not carry the same reputation of quality. Once you make this choice, you should plan for a very intensive experience in your TEFL course. You should plan for a full four-week course, without opportunity to do anything else except eat and sleep. The weekdays will be eight – nine hours of lecture and lab, and the evenings will comprise three – four hours of homework including lesson planning. Self-study will also be required on the weekends. Although this coursework is impossible to schedule in the middle of terms, or while holding down any other job, sometimes allowances can be made. The course can be fitted into an extended vacation. Many schools will actually provide the time off for their teachers who are completing a TEFL course. Some teachers are able to fit the course schedule during breaks between terms. The cost of a TEFL course is also a consideration, and again the cost will vary widely depending on the TEFL provider. Prices a provider charges are not regulated in any way. With the advent of online courses, TEFL coursework has been priced more competitively, but it still pays to research various schools carefully. The good news is that you do not have to pay premium prices to get a better certification. Each certification that complies with CELTA or CertTESOL will meet the minimum requirements for coursework and training. On the other hand, sometimes an extra charge for the coursework is reflected in better surroundings for the classes, or a better reputation of the provider with the particular schools that interest you. Having said this, the value of TEFL courses is certainly high, and the cost is much more attainable for many than the requirements to complete an advanced English degree. Comparatively, this makes the TEFL certification an excellent option.
