The Beauceron, also known as the "Beauce Sheep Dog" or "Red Stocking", is a herding dog. They have a short black coat with tan or grey markings. The breed first came to be in the 1500s. They were first raised for herding and guarding sheep. They're popular as a herding or companionship dog today. They can be characterized by their high intelligence, courage and demand for challenges. They have been developed from shared ancestors with another French breed in the Briard and are known to originate from France. They are identified as a medium to large sized breed of dog. The recommended male dimensions are 25.5-27.5 inches high and a weight of 65-110 pounds, whereas the female dimensions are 24-26.5 inches high and a weight of 65-85 pounds. They are famous for their courageous and loyal temperament. They are suitable as a protection dog, as they are generally suspicious towards people they haven't met. They're known to be highly smart, and ranks quite highly compared to every other dog when being trained to learn new obedience instructions. They're fairly suitable for a family pet, since they are good towards kids. They do combine peacefully with other pets such as other dogs and cats when socialized. Looking after their coat is a simple task. They demand occasional brushing every week (more in the shedding season), and a full-body groom once every 4 to 8 weeks. They enjoy having a large yard to run around in, but won't always be suited to living in an apartment. As with most medium to large sized dog breeds, they are primarily shorter-lived and have a life expectancy of 10-12 years. Their major health problem is hip dysplasia, and they're also vulnerable to bloat and PRA. Activities such as herding, swimming, agility and games of fetch will provide them with hours of fun. To reduce the likelihood of bad behavior, they require long (with varying routes) walks each day because of their high degree of energy. If you choose the Beauceron you should be willing to meet their high demand for leadership, exercise and mental stimulation. They are not the best choice for those with a less active lifestyle, but perfect for active owners or those with a job for them. One of the facts dog owners find most appealing about this breed is the fact it can be a great choice for defending the home and family due to its courageous and loyal nature.
