There is a great demand for freelance copywriters as more and more people appreciate how important writing online copy is to their businesses. When the internet was just starting there was a lot less competition and you could get away with a less sophisticated sales page. Today there is much more competition in nearly every niche and you want every edge you can get. Writing copy online is really no different from the offline world except that the medium you use has changed. The purpose of the message has stayed the same and it is vital that you understand what the purpose is. Your sales page needs to: • Attract your buyer • Keep their attention • Increase their desire for your product and or service • Get them to take the specific action you want them to. The best way of doing this has not changed because of the internet. Attract their attention with the best headline you can write. Top copy writers will tell you how they will spend more time getting the headline perfect than writing the body of the sales page. Why? Because if the headline does not do the job, the rest of the copy is a waste of time, it will not be read. There are various headline techniques that can be used successfully. For example "How to.....Even If..." can be used in most niches. Another idea is to make a huge promise; this will only work if it is true and can be proven in your copy. A misleading headline will have your readers leaving your site very quickly. Next you need to keep their attention and increase their desire for your product or service. Use bullets to show the benefits, this is an easy way for them to stand out and if your reader is skimming the page he will still read the bullets. Make sure you are using benefits NOT features, the readers are only interested in what it will do for them. Finally you have to get them to take action, in other words give you their credit card details and buy. Sometimes they are still not convinced by the time they get to the end of the letter, if they leave now chances are they are gone for good. This is where the savvy copy writers have it over the beginners, they create a need for urgency by offering a discount for a limited time only or having a limited number of products available (this works well for a course). The main point to get across is that you must act now before it is too late.
