Shopping may be too flippant of a word when it comes to liposuction and yet it captures the essence of what patients really need to do when they’re in the market for surgery. Scores of patients have fallen prey to unqualified posers who hope to make some fast cash off of another person’s desperation. When prospective patients decide that they’re ready to start talking to doctors about their vision, it’s important to follow some rules before setting out on the quest. Not every liposuction surgeon is right for every patient and not everyone who claims to be “qualified” to perform liposuction surgery actually is. There are a few tricky aspects to searching for a lipo doctor that every prospective patient needs to know about. For starters, in the United States, anyone with an “M.D.” can practice plastic surgery legally. That means that a proctologist who has been educated and trained in depth on how to deal with the rectum and the anus could convert to plastic surgery legally and claim to be a “liposuction surgeon”. A dermatologist could make the switch and with little more than a weekend workshop to prep, start doing tummy tucks. These medical doctors can legally practice cosmetic procedures with very little education, training, or experience in the field of plastic surgery. Patients who don’t bother looking into their doctor’s qualifications wouldn’t know the facts until after the surgery is completed and issues with their procedure arise. Often, doctors who specialize in unrelated medical fields will change over to plastic surgery because financially, they recognize that they would be better off. Few plastic surgery procedures involve dealing with insurance companies and all the extra paperwork involved. It isn’t hard to understand why many doctors would want to change their speciality. Plastic surgery is in high demand and everyone wants a slice of the pie. Unfortunately, however, for patients, liposuction and other procedures require quite a bit of finesse. Doctors who have had little training in plastic surgery aren’t as likely as board qualified surgeons to produce impeccable results. These days, there are also plenty of stories in the news about “fake” plastic surgeons who are simply everyday people off the street posing as plastic surgeons to make some extra cash. They lure prospective patients into their “clinics” by offering liposuction and other cosmetic procedures for amazingly low prices. Patients who feel desperate to make changes without spending the big bucks fall for the bait and often end up paying out to real plastic surgeons to have the amateur work redone. Sometimes patients even die at the hands of so-called surgeons who fail to follow the proper protocols to prevent infection, blood loss, or other tragic consequences. Patients who are in the market to find a qualified liposuction surgeon should start by finding a doctor who is board certified to perform plastic surgery. A quick interview with the doctor should establish his or her experience at performing liposuction surgery. Before agreeing to liposuction with a particular doctor, patients should know that their doctor has performed many similar procedures. And finally, patients should feel comfortable with their plastic surgeon. For best results, communication should be clear and patients should feel as though their physician really cares about them.
