Though liposuction is a popular surgery that’s performed regularly throughout the United States, patients who are beginning the search for a qualified liposuction surgeon need to be aware of the risks involved in the procedure. Most liposuction surgeries go off without a hitch, patients recover quietly, resume their normal routine, and enjoy their new body. But sometimes, things don’t go so smoothly and it’s important for patients to recognize their responsibility in preventing some of these problems. First and foremost, patients must make efforts to find a qualified, expertly trained, and educated plastic surgeon to perform liposuction surgery. This is perhaps the most important responsibility the patient has that will impact the final results of the procedure. Many patients go into liposuction surgery with the idea in mind that the procedure isn’t a “big deal”. Indeed, it can be easy to blow off the procedure as something as mundane as going to the salon. But patients need to realize that surgery is surgery and there are risks involved with surgery that they’ll never encounter when they’re getting their hair styled. Liposuction surgery needs to be taken seriously and patients need to be committed to communicating clearly with their plastic surgeon in order to prevent complications from arising. The larger the area that a patient is going to have treated with liposuction, the bigger the risks involved with the procedure. Infection is always a potential issue and often, patients will be sent home with a course of antibiotics that are to be taken religiously for a prescribed period of time to prevent infection. It is much easier to prevent infection using antibiotics than it is to get rid of an infection once one develops following surgery. One of the biggest responsibilities that patients have after their procedure is taking medications on schedule even if they feel fine. All antibiotic treatments need to be taken on schedule and through the end of the prescription to prevent infection. A qualified, highly trained plastic surgeon will be careful during surgery to monitor blood and fluid loss that could lead to shock and even death. Again, patients must take responsibility for finding a qualified surgeon who is capable of monitoring the body to prevent dangerous complications. A highly trained liposuction surgeon will counsel patients about the risk of blood clots and pulmonary embolism and the importance of moving around after the surgical procedure. A liposuction surgeon who knows the ins and outs of the procedure will only suction a safe amount of fat, blood, and fluids out of the body to maintain the necessary homeostasis during the procedure. Finally, of course, patients are responsible for finding the right surgeon to produce acceptable final results. Communicating clearly with the plastic surgeon about drugs, supplements, or herbs that you might be taking prior to surgery as well as smoking and drinking habits can play a surprisingly strong role in the final outcome in terms of scarring and the tightness of the skin in the targeted area. By checking on a surgeon’s credentials and communicating clearly, most patients will end up with desirable results. By following the doctor’s instructions during recovery, patients will be much more likely to walk away with the body they’ve always wanted.
