Before you start shopping around for the right doctor, prospective liposuction patients should know what questions to ask about the procedure they’re planning to have done. Knowing the details about liposuction body contouring can help you ask the right questions and communicate clearly with your doctor about your needs and wants. Do your research to really understand the gist of this popular procedure so that you can set yourself up to get the best results possible. One of the most important aspects of your surgery will involve anesthesia. Although it may seem like a small part of the overall package, anesthesia can play a big role in contributing toward risks and side effects associated with your liposuction body contouring surgery. Your cosmetic surgeon will make a recommendation to you about anesthesia based on your health, and the extent of the work that you’re having done, but it’s important that you understand the difference between local and general anesthesia so that you can talk intelligently with your doctor about the options. Local anesthesia usually involves injections of lidocaine, bicarbonate, and epinephrine solution during a liposuction surgery. The numbing solution works locally on tissues that are being targeted during the procedure and the patient remains awake throughout the procedure. Often, surgeons will offer patients a sedative to make them feel more relaxed, but still aware during liposuction body contouring. In contrast, general anesthesia affects the patient from head to toe. The patient who has been put under general anesthesia is not conscious or wakeful during the procedure and will have no memory of anything that happened during the surgery. Though patients can have a toxic reaction to lidocaine, general anesthesia carries far more risks than local anesthesia. Under some circumstances, however general anesthesia may be indicated. Once anesthesia has been administered, the liposuction body contouring procedure will take a variable amount of time depending on the extent of the work being done and the area being targeted. The doctor will begin by making incisions in the targeted area of the body. Then, he or she will insert a cannula into the body and begin suctioning fat from the area. Once the designated amount of fat has been removed, the incisions are closed up and the patient is moved into a recovery area. Patients who have been given local anesthesia are often sent home the same day while patients who have been given general anesthesia are more likely to be required to spend a night in the hospital. Drains are often inserted into the target area to help remove excess fluid and blood from the tissues after the surgery. It isn’t always necessary to have drains inserted following liposuction surgery, but either way they are often removed just a few short days after the procedure. Patients often take up to a month to fully recover from their liposuction body contouring surgery and it can take up to six months for the final results from the surgery to become apparent. Talk with your plastic surgeon about your expectations and concerns regarding the procedures and ask questions to understand the details of your procedure before you commit to the surgery.
