Making the decision to go ahead and have plastic surgery on some flawed physical feature that you find bothersome is difficult. There’s accepting the fact that the problem is there in the first place and then making the commitment to change it. Then, people who are ready to make a change have to actually act on their desire to see a difference. This is the scary part. Finding and talking with a plastic surgeon about making permanent alterations to one’s body can be daunting. If liposuction is the surgical procedure that seems like the most likely operation to help you achieve a satisfactory appearance, it can be immensely helpful to know a thing or two about the surgery before you talk with a doctor. Getting a feel for the procedure and what it can do for you can help you be clear about your expectations to ensure better results once your body has completely healed. Liposuction is a relatively straightforward procedure. Patients are anesthetized and then incisions are made in the treatment area. A small hollow tube is inserted into the body through these incisions and then a suction machine is turned on to remove the excess fat cells. After all of the targeted fat cells are removed, the incisions are closed and the patient is moved to a recovery area before being sent home. Most of the time, surgery lasts for between one and two hours in an outpatient facility. Some patients are given general anesthesia while other receive only local anesthetic to deal with pain in the treated area. Given that the surgery is successful and the patient follows the doctor’s instructions during recovery, they can expect to get back to work within one to two weeks. It’s important for patients to realize that though many patients are able to begin a normal work-out routine and work schedule within a couple of weeks, the final results may not become obvious for several months. Many doctors recommend that patients give themselves six months to really see the full impact of the surgery on their bodies. The procedure can help patients get rid of excess fat in areas of the body that are resistant to diet and exercise (like saddlebags, love handles, and that spare tire around the middle). If you’ve tried every diet on earth and spent your fair share of time at the gym with no success at getting rid of pockets of fat in isolated areas on the body, liposuction body contouring might be the right solution for you. Patients can expect to see striking results from the procedure which not only reduces the volume of fat in targeted areas, but also can tighten up the skin overlying the treated areas. Depending on the type of liposuction treatment that you use to get rid of the excess fat cells, sagging skin may also respond to the surgery, especially if laser lipolysis is used to get the results. Lasers can be directed at skin tissues which can encourage the growth of collagen and enhanced elasticity in the skin. This can make a big difference in the appearance of the final results. Though skin tightening doesn’t have the exact same effect on all patients, those who adhere to a healthy lifestyle and avoid alcohol and smoking should see a striking change in the youthfulness of the skin in the areas targeted by liposuction body contouring. In most cases, excess fat in the treated areas should be gone and the body should look more proportionate than it did before the procedure.
