DUBAI (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah is "deeply concerned"about sectarian violence in Lebanon, state news agency SPA said onTuesday, in an apparent reference to the killing of a LebaneseSunni cleric opposed to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Violence linked to the Syria conflict has spilled over intoLebanon, where soldiers on Sunday shot dead a prominent Sunnicleric and a member of a Lebanese political alliance against Assadin the northern city of Tripoli. Sunni-led Saudi Arabia, the world's biggest oil exporter, is aleading supporter of Lebanon's Sunni Muslims. It has long viewed the Assad government with distrust, pointing toits alliance with Shi'ite Iran which Saudi Arabia suspects ofstirring up unrest in neighboring Bahrain and among its own Shi'iteminority. Riyadh has led Arab efforts to isolate Assad's government to endits suppression of a year-long revolt and has called for Syrianrebels to be armed. "Saudi Arabia is deeply concerned and is following up on the recentdevelopments of Tripoli events, especially the targeting of a mainsect in the country's social fabric," Saudi state news agency SPAcitied King Abdullah as saying in a letter to Lebanese PresidentMichel Suleiman. "Due to the gravity of the crisis and the possibility of it causinga sectarian strife in Lebanon and bringing it back to the shadow ofthe civil war, we are looking to your... attempts to interfere toend the crisis... and keeping Lebanon away from foreign strugglesespecially with the Syrian crisis nearby." The killing of the anti-Assad Sunni cleric in Lebanon, whichfollowed battles in the Lebanese city of Tripoli between factionsopposed and loyal to Assad, triggered street fighting in thecapital of Beirut. The clashes in Beirut were the worst since 2008 sectarian fightingthat brought back memories of Lebanon's 15-year civil war. The United Arab Emirates and Kuwait have urged their citizens tostay away from Lebanon - a favorite destination for wealthy Gulftourists - citing security concerns in the country. Saudi Arabia's ambassador to Lebanon last month warned Saudis tostay away from Lebanon's border areas, after two Saudi citizenswere kidnapped and tortured for eight days, before being freed in ajoint Saudi-Lebanese operation.
