Do-it-yourself projects require different tools and when using a drill for the project, you may need different-size drill bits. Changing the drill bit of a power drill is simple and only takes a couple of minutes to do. Power drills often come with all the supplies you need to change the drill bit. Locate the key. It is a small, round piece of metal with a series of slanted, slotted teeth around one end and a crossbar at the other end. Locate the chuck on the drill. It is on the end of the drill in which the drill bit is seated. At its base is a series of slotted teeth. There are several holes around the surface of the chuck. Insert the short end of the key into one of the holes in the chuck, ensuring that the teeth of the key and chuck interlock with one another. Turn the key to the left while holding the drill firmly in your other hand. Continue turning until the drill bit is released. Once the drill bit is released, it may be necessary to continue turning the key if the replacement drill bit is larger than the one being removed. Remove the drill bit from the end of the drill and set it aside. Insert the smooth end of the replacement drill bit into the end of the chuck and hold it in place. Tighten the opening around the drill bit by hand by grasping the smooth area below the teeth of the chuck and turning it to the right. Finish securing the drill bit by inserting the key into a hole in the chuck as before and turning it to the right. If your drill did not come with a key, you can purchase one at a local hardware store. Hardware stores sell rubber straps that can be used to attach the key to the power cord of a drill. This keeps it handy at all times and keeps it from getting lost. In addition to drill bits, there are screwdriver attachments that can be purchased and placed in a drill so that the drill can be used as an electric screwdriver. To remember which way to turn your key, think "righty tighty, left lucy." In other words, turning it to the right tightens; turning it to the left loosens. To avoid injury, make sure that your drill is not plugged into an electric outlet when changing out the drill bit. Point the drill bit end of the drill away from you at all times while changing out the bit. Battery pack for drill: AEG power tool battery, BVlack & Decker battery, Firestorm drill battery
