To save weight the 3 series incorporates in all its models an engine block made of a lightweight composite magnesium/aluminum alloy. Safety is also always a concern in the 3 series. In government crash testing the 3 series sedan placed very well with a five out of five overall star rating. In other testing it placed as well or better than other manufacturers or its competitors in passenger safety.
