The Toyota Corolla Spacio is a Corolla-based minivan launched in January 1997. If you think a small compact car isn’t enough for your growing family, the Spacio, or Verso MPV as it’s also known in othr markets, may be just the right vehicle for you. This model was released in two generations; the latest one entered the market in May 2001. This second release was designed based on the platform of the ninth-generation Corolla sedan. Let’s take a closer look at the Spacio and see what makes it a powerful compact MPV. Engine types Buyers of the Spacio can choose from five engine choices. There are two gasoline engines: a 1.6-liter and a 1.8-liter engine. Both use VVT-i technology. The 1.6-liter engine can accelerate from zero to sixty miles per hour in 12.7 seconds—not too bad for a minivan. As for the diesels, the first engine was a 2.0 D-4D engine until it was replaced by a more powerful 2.2 D-4D. The superior 2.2 is considered to be the most eco-friendly engine in the lineup because it emits only 164 g/km of carbon dioxide. The Spacio’s fuel economy is remarkable too, getting as much as 46 mpg on average. Safety and reliability According to Consumer Reports’ car reliability survey for 2012, Toyota vehicles have been regarded as the most reliable models by car owners the world over. The Spacio is a true-blue Toyota in this regard, and it provides the same standard of dependability and passenger safety. In fact, the Toyota Corolla Spacio has been given a five-star rating by one of the most technical and thorough auto testers out there: the European New Car Assessment Programme. This certainly shows that the Spacio is one of the safest minivans in the secondhand market today. The Spacio has been equipped with impressive standard safety features , which include Isofix child seat mounts and nine airbags. The airbags are located at the sides, front, curtain, and the driver’s knee area to prevent leg and knee injury (hitting the dashboard is a common cause of knee injury) in the event of a collision. In addition to these, the Spacio has been fitted with anti-lock brakes and electronic brake force distribution that help to keep the car stable during emergency braking. Space and comfort Being a minivan allows the Toyota Corolla Spacio to have more space for its passengers. It can seat up to seven people—for example, three adults and four children—and if you’re not that many but have plenty of luggage, the Spacio can give you all the cargo space that you need. The second and third rows may be folded flat into the floor; the middle row can even slide to adjust space accordingly. The seating versatility is one benefit basic sedans can’t give. Eco-friendly You’ll be glad to know that a minor model change in 2003 resulted in the Spacio’s meeting the ultra-low emission standards set by the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism—exhaust emissions were cut seventy-five percent! So you see, by getting a Toyota Corolla Spacio, you not only have a multipurpose vehicle but also one that is fuel-thrifty and environment-friendly. And that is what we call vehicle power.
