Tools Needed For Foil Embossing

Foil embossing is a type of handicraft that was popularized in Mexico. It has been characterized as a process of punching holes in and imprinting various designs on thick foils of metal with gauges that are sized 38. These metal foils are more or less as thick as soda cans. The craft is typically used in creating candle holders, picture frames, lampshades and small altars. There are many different tools that can be utilized for the work. Professional artisans use specialized tools while beginners start with household items.

Most tools that are utilized for foil embossing are sized similar to writing pens. They usually come with metal, plastic or wooden handles. Working tips will be constructed of metal, with each design coming in a variety of sizes. Tools will typically be sold by sets in craft stores. It may also be possible to get them individually though.

Under the foil shall be a mat which can come as dense foam, rubber or leather. This tool is what will avoid having your material get punctured and additionally give it a unique characteristic. It is essential that you place your work on a hard surface, like a glass. This is so you will get an end result that is more defined.

What you need to impress your design in the front areas is a stylus. Make sure that you make use of a soft mat when imprinting using a stylus. This device comes with a blunt tip, which helps you avoid puncturing your material. To define the edge lines, use a refiner tool. However, remember to place your work on a hard surface when making use of the refiner.

Just like with painters, an artisan might also need to make use of paper stumps. These can be real useful in inculcating depth to designs. Foils have to be positioned on mats, though some artisans might consider placing them on their hands, and have them run over by paper stumps in circles. Edges can then be outlined with the use of refiners.

So the metal surfaces will not be turning up with scratches, most artisans make use of specialized erasers. These erasers are usually made of Teflon. The special eraser tools are often useful in trying to remove embossed marks and unwanted creases. Flattening large regions will require the use of rubber rollers. These are known to ease out curls which usually develop through the process.

There are also other tools that can be used by artisans. Among a few are decorative wheels, cups, detailers and balls. These can be considered for adding in more interest on to pieces. Punching in of holes can also be a great part for an intricate design.

However, it is also important that crafters know they do not really need expensive tools when it comes to embossing. Common items will also work well, even those that are found in homes. In fact, starters as with young kids should be given only household items that they can utilize for mastering the technique. Examples of items are disposable baking pans which can work as alternatives to craft foils.

As alternatives to soft mats, cardboard layers may be used. Wooden sticks can substitute stylus and candy apples or even thick dull pencils can be used as well. Ice picks may work for punching holes and letter openers can be utilized as refiner tools. What tools can be used for foil embossing will often rely on how imaginative the artisans are.
