An addiction is defined as a condition that results when a person ingests a substance or engages in an activity that is perceived pleasurable, but the continued use of which becomes compulsive and interferes with ordinary life responsibilities. Denial is often associated with addiction; hence the “addict” may not be aware that his behaviour is out of control that causes problems to themselves and to others. Addictions are highly discouraged since they are socially unacceptable, but they are not limited only with substances such as alcohol, cocaine, and nicotine; or activities such as sexual promiscuity and gambling. People may have certain habits that are not entirely considered socially unacceptable, which makes them harder to be identified and dealt with. Those can be manifested in simple ways, such as obsession to hand washing, lavish spending on online mobile stores, or stalking a celebrity. You may already have certain addictions that you aren’t aware of. Check the list below to find out if you are indeed already suffering from one. 1. Caffeine. These days, caffeine is no longer found in coffee and tea alone; it has been added to most beverages and foods. Aside from its effect on boosting energy, manufacturers make caffeine as an additive because it causes the development of dependence on the substance among consumers. Signs of addiction to caffeine include restlessness, chest pains, fatigue, nausea, and headaches. 2. Surfing the internet. The internet has just been around for a few decades, but it has already garnered a lot of avid users who access it via their personal computers or their smartphones. It’s actually not that surprising since most business transactions nowadays take place via the internet. But there are those who spend much time online which starts to affect their real life and relationships with other people. Studies show that internet addicts may actually go online just to feel normal, and the time spent away from the internet creates the feeling of withdrawal. It has been found that an average internet addict spends 38 hours a week online on average. 3. Love. The feeling of being in love creates excitement and attachment. This in turn seldom turns people preoccupied and obsessed with the feeling and with the person. Love addicts tend to feel as if they can’t live without their significant other, and they view them as their only source of happiness. 4. Exercise. Working out is generally good for the body. While there are those who are lazy to exercise, there are others who are addicted to it. People addicted to exercise may exhibit withdrawal symptoms if they are unable to do it even if the reason is out of their control like an injury. Exercising more than the body can take may be dangerous because it can leave a person experiencing fatigue, muscle spasms, development of hernias or haemorrhoids due to overexertion. 5. Face picking. Zits can be annoying. That is why others pick on their faces to get rid of that excessive oil trapped in the pores. Doing this can cause bleeding, scabbing, scarring, or even skin infections. 6. Allergens from food. Ingesting foods you have allergic reactions to causes your body to release endorphins to lift your mood and make you happier. This habit is actually a strange phenomenon, but it’s pretty common. In fact, eating foods you’re allergic to in small to moderate amounts induces desensitization to the allergen to lessen or completely render you immune from reactions to that specific allergen. But this can be very dangerous; because it is possible to experience a systemic allergic reaction that may cause your airway to constrict that may be life-threatening. The first step in battling addiction is always to have self-awareness. Knowing that you have a problem will give you the opportunity to act on your addiction and bring yourself back on track to a healthy lifestyle. Related Article Children and their Gadgets
