MLA style is one of the most recognized styles when writing for liberal fields, including English language and literature. MLA format is provided by the Modern Language Association and has been utilized by academic and research community for about more than 50 years now. Frequently, the users of MLA style are the humanities fields, including English studies, foreign languages and literature, comparative literature, cultural studies and any other fields of language and culture. MLA format, including MLA heading, stylistic technicalities and the works cited are dictated by MLA style as well. The utilization of a writing style is very important for this allows for consistency within a field. In addition, it also said to be that the use of MLA citation style gives cues to the readers which help them navigate the writing and locate all the references that were utilized thus establishing the writer’s credibility and reliability in the research and academic community. There some general guidelines to follow when writing in this style. These are: -No title page should be provided. -A header that lists the surname of the author and pagination should be included at the upper right-hand corner of all pages. -Write in a legible font preferably Times New Roman. -One-inch margin on all sides of your paper should be observed and a one-half-inch indents at the beginning of paragraphs. For In-text citations in MLA style: -When the author is referring to the works of others, the source information should be placed within parentheses after a quote or paraphrase. -Every word and even phrase utilized in the parenthetical citation should be the first word or phrase listed on the works cited entry. In MLA format, it also requires a works cited page wherein all the sources that were used are listed. It must be in a different sheet at the end of your paper with the same MLA format of one-inch margins and MLA heading which includes surname and pagination. Title the page “Works Cited” and must be centered and all the citations should be double-spaced. All the entries must be listed in an alphabetical order by author’s surname or by the title of the work in case author in not known. The research and academic community agree on the need to document all the scholarly borrowings that took place. However, documentation conventions can vary because of the different needs of scholarly disciplines. MLA citation format is determined by the Modern Language Association and has been widely recognized and used by schools, academic departments, and instructors for years now. The guidelines that were created by this association are also utilized by over 1,100 scholarly and literary journals, magazines, and newspapers and my numerous universities and commercial presses. The general guidelines of MLA are also being followed throughout United States, Brazil, India, China, Japan, Philippines, Taiwan and any other countries around the world.
