For many instructors, the chance to train in TEFL and qualify for teaching English abroad is a great adventure. It is certainly the chance to do something different. In some countries, the demand is so great that teaching in a foreign country can also carry an increase in pay as well. This is particularly true in some countries where the cost of living is very low. This makes the pay go a long way. However, many TEFL teachers go abroad because of the great need for TEFL teachers abroad. They see their TEFL training as an opportunity to help foreign students, and become part of the economic recovery of a struggling nation. When a TEFL trained instructor begins teaching English abroad, he will generally experience a completely new culture and meet many different kinds of students. Many of the students may not appreciate the opportunity the teacher brings (teenagers will be teenagers) but s surprising majority of students know very well the blessings the teacher brings, and are very grateful. Many teachers are very surprised about how demonstrative their foreign students are, and find their experience teaching abroad to be very rewarding. The problems caused by a struggling nation can be especially frustrating on the youth of that nation. Like children everywhere, they grow up with dreams and aspirations. Many are exposed to television and other media from more prosperous countries, and dream of a life with opportunities and rewards. As they become older and perhaps complete the requirements of their local school, they are rebuffed when they look for means of employment, to support themselves and their young families. Their situation and their lack of opportunities is often foremost in their thoughts. This is the reason foreign students and their parents appreciate a visitor from abroad, teaching English to the youth of their country. They understand the bravery and the desire for excellence that prompts people to come to their country. They realize that their nation cannot necessarily offer the same rewards as those teachers would find in their native country. Very astute students realize that some of these teachers leave the fabulous places they see on television in order to come to their country. These are not idle dreams. The efforts of TEFL trained instructors teaching English abroad have begun to blossom. Governments are realizing the importance of these efforts and increasing funding for education. Students learning English and establishing ties to the outside world have increased local commerce. These are some of the positive things that a TEFL trained teacher brings to his or her students in a foreign country.
