Digha-The Brighton of the East

Travel & Tourism
West Bengal, the land to go to, a sanctuary of cultural pleasures, a civilization to tour through, without doubt can be also called a destination. Holiday makers come to West Bengal for its wealth of sights, cultural exuberance, variety of terrain and looking for that special something, an additional punch that only a place like West Bengal guarantees and delivers. Aside from the richness of the Town of Joy, Kolkata, West Bengal has a few number of visitor spots found outside of the city. Places such as Digha, Puri, etc are worth discussing. A ride to these destinations is not such a terrible concept for a short journey away from the hustle of the town life. When we talk of sea beaches, the name Digha comes to our mind. Digha can be called West Bengal's preferred sea resort and holiday maker spot, found south-west of Calcutta. It was found in the latter eighteenth century by the English. Originally known as Beerkul, it is named as the "Brighton of the East" in one of Warren Hasting's letters (1780 AD) to his other half. In 1923, a British visitor John Frank Smith was charmed by the wonderful thing about Digha and started living there. John Frank Smiths scribbling about Digha, slowly gave exposure to this place. After autonomy, he persuaded the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy to develop Digha as a beach resort. Digha is 187 km from Calcutta and can be named as among the best places for a calming vacation. The place has a low gradient with a shallow sand beach with delicate waves, which extends seven kms in length. In Digha, the sea starts about a mile away from the beginning of the beach. The picturesque wonder of this place is relaxing and luring. The beach is girdled with casuarinas plantations along the coast augmenting the great thing about this place. These trees aside from decking out the sands also help in reducing the erosion on the dunes. One can view both dawn and nightfall at Digha sea beach. The sunsets and sunrises reflecting off the salted waters of the Bay of Bengal is something straight off an artist's easel. The sea at Digha is calm and shallow for approximately a mile from the beach, making it quite safe for swimming. Digha is a tough beach, where one can drive during low tide. Nevertheless the beach is facing the issue of sea erosion. showering is recommendable only in the low tide. One can view both dawn and nightfall at Digha sea beach. A little city, Digha is stuffed with hostels often around one main road. It can boast of a wide and unadorned beach, caesarian groves by the side of a delicate sea and a good climate round the year. Washing is recommendable only in the low tide. The Digha market is open at low tide. Curios made from sea-shell, Shell jewellery, moderate types of reputed Madur of Midnapore ( hand-woven mat made from weeds ) in colorful designs ; Cottage crafts of Digha and Midnapore will be available at the beach and at other outlets in the city. To bring back home a souvenir, try the cottage crafts of Digha and Midnapore.
