The Canadian Federation of Independent Business releases a study every year named Communities in Boom. The study lists the top places for entrepreneurs to start their businesses. Start-ups and independent businesses are vital to the flourishing of any community. Entrepreneurs build the economy of cities, and cities enable entrepreneurship. Rankings of the Communities in Boom study include more than 100 Canadian municipalities with a population of at least 25,000. The CFIB looks for entrepreneurial hot spots where there is a high presence of start-ups, and the entrepreneurs have high levels of optimism and success. There is no single way to rank the entrepreneurship quotient in a city, so the CFIB assembled 14 indicators that are grouped in three categories. The three categories are: (1) Presence - which is a representation of the scale and growth of business ownership, as well as its industrial diversity, (2) Perspective - covers indicators associated with optimism and growth plans, and (3) Policy - represents indicators associated with the actions local governments take with respect to business taxation and regulation. The Communities in Boom study is broken down by big cities and mid-sized cities. The residents of Fort McMurray couldn't be happier that Wood Buffalo came in as ninth in the top 10 entrepreneurial mid-sized cities in Canada. Start-ups can be found along the streets in the Wood Buffalo region, and may also be from the laptop in a Fort McMurray apartment. The province of Alberta dominates the list, here are the top 10 entrepreneurial mid-sized cities in Canada: #1 - Grand Prairie is a city located in northern Alberta within the Southern portion of an area known as Peace river country.
