Press always has something to discuss and analyze. This time they set about cinematography and named movies that to their opinion praise smoking habit. There were made studies and it was proved that smoking in movies has negative effects on people (especially children) making them want to smoke in their real life. Thus a lobby group with its logo «Smoke Free Movies» pressures Hollywood to reduce the number of scenes with smoking. The less people are smoking cigarettes the better. Thus there was introduced an indicator called “tobacco impressions” which shows the number of times a movie character lights up a cigarette multiplied by the number of tickets sold. Movies with high rating may be devalued according to these standards. However, there were made studies in this field which show that for each 500 smoking scenes a child sees in movies, his chance of trying cheap cigarettes increases by 49%. Stanton A. Glantz, Smoke Free Movies’ director, says that movies made to be sold to children must not promote cigarettes. Children should know that smoking results in nicotine addiction. However, if we take a look at American children we will notice that the great majority of them suffers from obesity. Nowadays, obesity in America is a national problem. Not smoking in movies is the main problem in fact, but the obesity which causes a number of diseases. For teenage girls the lack of healthy examples in movies which show us skinny actresses may result in severe dieting in order to become as skinny as movie characters. Here the probability of getting an eating disorder is much higher than probability of starting smoking. A study showed that 96% of teenage girls wish to have a different body. 54% of teenage girls aged between 13 and 20 skip their meals. Between 1997 and 2007 there was tripled the number of cosmetic surgical procedures made on children younger than 18 years old, and around 65% of women and girls suffer from an eating disorder. It does not mean that smoking in movies is of no importance. If we start blowing up smoking in movies it would be fair to start blowing up junk food too. There exists a belief that James Bond smokes famous Bond cigarettes in movies and that Bond cigarettes were named after this hero. In fact, Bond cigarettes were created long before the movie appeared. 1902 is the year when Philip Morris created them. At the beginning they were called "Old Bond Street" making reference to Bond street in London where the company was based. As you see, it has nothing to do with james Bond.
