If you go by the definition, business management is something that involves activities associated with running a company, such as controlling, leading, monitoring, organizing, and planning. But if you ask me, I would say it is something more than that. Let's face it. The entire business model is constantly evolving. And organizations are adopting new methods and tactics to comply with the changes brought forth by the globalisation of business and economy. Not only business organizations, managers too are facing the daunting task of implementing right business strategies required to manage an organization effectively and with competence. This is where a diploma or degree in business management helps! In India itself there are a string of colleges from where you can pursue a degree of diploma in business management. But, if you ask me, I would advise you to opt for top B schools while applying for such programs. For instance, IIM offers various business management programs and earning a degree from such an institution will cement your future to say the least. Not only you can learn about the advancements in business process but also the nuances of strategic management, macroeconomics, microeconomics, HR management and all that which will help you to jump-start your career graph. Of course, opting for business management programs will land you a job in a corporate MNC. But is that your sole aim? By that, I mean, obviously working in an MNC and that too in managerial level will get your bank balance ringing. But, are you doing something different from your peers? At IIM, we are always encouraged to think out-of-the-box. For me, knowledge and application of knowledge comes above everything else. And if you apply your knowledge in something that is unconventional, chances are that you will be successful and most importantly satisfied. Here's one such case that transcends the mundane paths taken by the careerist-ic lot. The IIM graduate who defied social obligations Nirmal Kumar, a graduate form IIM Ahmedabad, could have easily bagged a job in a corporate MNC. But, he chose otherwise. Today, he earns Rs. 45,000 a month by managing auto rickshaws in Gujarat. Yes, you read it right. Kumar says, the idea of managing auto rickshaws first struck his mind while he was quarelling with an auto rickshaw driver over fare. And his life took a different route thereof. Kumar hails from Siwan district of Bihar. One day while returning to his college from a restaurant he got involved in an argument with an auto driver, who supposedly tried to cheat him over fare. That's when he thought of striking a deal with auto drivers who parked their vehicles outside the IIM campus. The deal was that Kumar assured them of providing newspapers and insurance cover (all from his own pocket). In return, the auto drivers promised of charging proper fares. The idea instantly was a hit and funding from various regions came pouring in. The funds helped Kumar to increase facilities for drivers. He then came up with a brand called 'G Auto'. The auto drivers were bestowed with benefits like health-care and education for their children at subsidized rates. G Auto also came second in the SMART Mobility Awards presented by University of Michigan. Kumar was asked several times whether he regrets of not opting for a job in an MNC that could have earned him a lot of money than he earns today. Kumar says, "Today, my batch mates want to emulate me, but it is not the other way round." Kumar is physically challenged and currently manages about 10,000 auto rickshaws in Gujarat. Now, that’s what I was trying to say. After completing your bachelor degree you can choose any career option you want to. You can study business administration, business management and the likes as per your subject of interest. But always try to ensure that the knowledge you gain is implemented for the betterment of the society as a whole. And this article speaks about just that. Arindom is a final year student IIM student pursuing a diploma in business management. He is a regular contributor to the college magazine, who wishes to opt for an unconventional career.
