Porcelain sinks are classic types of sinks that add value and a sophisticated appearance to your kitchen & bathroom. However, these sink types also are extremely fragile. Accidentally dropping a metal frying pan or even a drinking glass into the sink easily results in chips. Although fixing a porcelain sink chip is relatively easy, maintaining the integrity of the chipped area is difficult if the chip is in a constantly wet area, such as the bottom of the sink’s basin. Instructions as follows: Firstly, purchase an epoxy product that indicates on the label that it is useful on porcelain surfaces. Look for this type of product at your local home supply store. Secondly, sand the inside of the chipped part of your porcelain sink using a 400-grit or 600-grit sandpaper so as to get rid of rust and dust present in the chipped area. Clean the chipped surface with a damp sponge and soap, and dry it using a towel. Check the area to make sure it appears relatively rough, which is necessary for the epoxy to adhere to it effectively. Thirdly, mix the epoxy according to the manufacturer’s instructions. To do this, pour the contents of the product two bottles into the mixing tray that comes with the epoxy package, and stir the ingredients together for a minute. Fourthly, allow the epoxy mixture to sit for half an hour until it becomes thicker. Dip a small brush into the thickened mixture, and apply the epoxy to the porcelain chip. Let the first layer of epoxy dry for at least 45 minutes before you put a second layer on top, which is required if your porcelain kitchen sink chip is very deep. Select a clean brush for applying the second layer as well as each necessary subsequent layer. Fifthly, give your porcelain sink chip an entire day to dry completely. Do not apply a cleaner to this area for an entire week as well. Choose only a household cleaner that is not abrasive and a soft sponge when you are ready to clean the sink. Tips & Warnings Note that the working time of mixed epoxy is about an hour at room temperature but six hours in the refrigerator. For this reason, place the epoxy in the refrigerator between applying layers to your porcelain chip, and discard the mixture when you are finished with the project.
