by Tamara Girard Veterinary technicians, also known as vet techs, work diligently every day to improve the health and quality of life for many different types of animals. The duties performed by a vet tech are as diverse as their animal patients. Veterinary technicians are similar to nurses in a hospital setting and provide general care for animals in a healthcare setting, typically performing the following tasks: • Collecting biological samples • Conducting preliminary patient evaluations • Administering medication • Performing medical procedures • Assisting during surgical procedures Additionally, many vet techs obtain additional training and certification to become specialists in a specific area of animal care, such as anesthesiology, dental technology or internal medicine. Many veterinary technicians find rewarding work in a veterinary clinic or animal hospital. However, there is a growing demand for qualified vet techs in many other unique work settings. Vet Techs often work in a zoo setting to assist zoo veterinarians in caring for ill zoo animals, providing medical treatment and assisting with surgical procedures. Additionally, some government agencies work closely with animals in disaster response and research and routinely employ vet techs. The daily job tasks and diverse career opportunities contribute toward the satisfaction that most vet techs receive from their careers. Even before entering the field of veterinary technology, many vet tech students find their vet tech education itself to be interesting and rewarding. As many accredited veterinary technology programs include intensive hands-on training working with real animals either in an on-site facility or through off-site internship experiences. These real-world experiences provide valuable and rewarding experiences for vet tech students. Additionally, working closely with animal patients and their human owners is considered to be a very gratifying aspect of the veterinary technology field. Vet techs spend a great deal of time with animals and their owners providing advice and education on the proper care of their pet. Educating families and serving as a resource for additional information is a gratifying part of being a veterinary technician. Veterinary technicians have the ability to do work that they truly love every day. Not many professions offer such a high level of personal job satisfaction.
