tourism development strategy ? It is a plan to specifically attract tourism to a destination and increase tourists´ inflow in the long term. A destination needs to capitalize on its strengths and correctly choose the target market if it wants to be successful. What follows is a very brief analysis and comparison between two countries´ tourism strategies, Estonia and Bhutan. A tourism development strategy can influence a destination positively or negatively. This is why it is important to look closely at a destination´s inventory of attractions, to understand what kind of tourists would be interested in its offering. Bhutan for example has made big efforts in attracting the right kind of tourists with its strategy. The country´s prime attractions include mountains and spectacular scenery, remote Buddhist monasteries and trekking in the Himalayas. It consciously wanted to focus on higher quality tourism in order to protect its unspoiled landscape and culture. It chose a target market with a higher income with a strategy that develops a responsible and sustainable tourism. Estonia, a country roughly similar in population and size, is trying to market itself as an all-round destination. The main attractions include the capital Tallinn´s Old Town, unspoiled countryside and a few spa resort towns. Instead of trying to appeal to all travelers, it should carefully research the market to better target the kinds of people that would visit Estonia. Apart from Tallinn, no other city seems big enough or historical to deserve a city break. Also, it may not be a top destination for LGTB or disabled people given that some of its neighboring countries, like Finland and Sweden, are much more advanced in this respect. Therefore, maybe Estonia needs to learn from Bhutan and try to rethink its tourism development strategy . It could promote its natural beauty and develop the spa resort towns. Even though it is small and rather unknown on the international tourist market, similarly to Bhutan, it does have its appeal and its strengths. Developing the right country strategy and attracting the right kind of tourisst is essential for both countries to reap the benefits in the long term. "> What is a tourism development strategy ?
