Streamlining work processes is one of the many specialties that Amy Sloan Merkley has as a Project Management Professional. With over 14 years of experience managing business transformation projects, Amy Sloan Merkley has learned the best strategies to boost efficiency. Since 2006 when she received her PMP certification, Amy Sloan Merkley has helped dozens of businesses and organizations make their internal and external work processes more efficient. To streamline business practices, Amy Sloan Merkley suggests: - Mapping out the current process. By seeing what current business practices are, it’s easier to see where things can be improved, says Amy Sloan Merkley. Having a visual map not only highlights weaknesses, but showcases places where a company is excelling as well.
- Define the problem. By defining exactly what needs to be improved, you can better spot the problem and diagnose a solution. However, Amy Sloan Merkley notes that there isn’t always a problem. Sometimes, you simply just want to boost efficiency, and if that’s the case, then define that as your goal.
- Implement the solution. Whenever Amy Sloan Merkley spots problem by mapping out the current process and is able to define the problem, she can easily prescribe the solution. Once that solution is determined, then implementing it should be relatively easy. However, Amy Sloan Merkley notes that to implement change, it’s important to be on the same page as executive management and any external investors and major players.
- Restructure what needs to be improved. Certain changes require resources – both monetary and manpower. By restructuring resources and those distribution channels to make the changes possible, you’ll be able to enact change, says Amy Sloan Merkley.
- Eliminate resistance. If there are processes that are hindering positive changes that benefit the business, then eliminate them. Sometimes resistance will come from team members. If that’s the case, Amy Sloan Merkley suggests being transparent and very communicative. By keeping lines of communication open, you’re more likely to get everyone on the same page.
- Implement the long-term vision. Now that a more efficient process is in place, Amy Sloan Merkley encourages Project Management Professionals and business owners to keep sight of the mission of the company. It’s great to celebrate the success and improvements found from change, but it’s equally important to remember how that change benefits the mission of the business: serving customers.
According to Amy Sloan Merkley, keeping this in mind will ensure that the business streamlines its process for many years to come.
