Butterfly Bush, also known as Buddleia, is a shrub-like plant that looks like a compact lilac that will make a wonderful addition to you garden this spring. Butterfly Bush grows quickly and their sweetly scented flowers smell like honey. The blooms attract butterflies and hummingbirds that dine on the nectar midsummer to early fall. If you look forward to these friendly visitors every year make sure your garden isn’t missing the Butterfly Bush! When in bloom the bush will often be seen with a mass of butterflies on the flowers, especially during hot sunny afternoons when they seem to be drawn to the blossoms like moth to a flame. This fragrant flower is attractive not only to birds and butterflies but to people as well. Make sure to plant you Butterfly Bush near seating areas and window containers to enjoy these perfumed beauties’ sweetly perfumed blooms. The Butterfly Bush is a hardy plant that grows typically from zones 5 to 11, depending on the varietal. Many varietals are available but some of our favorites are the dwarf buddleia as they are perfect for small gardens and containers. Breeders have spent years painstakingly crafting these miniature bushes that are ideal for those without the luxury of a huge garden, or looking for a fragrant but compact container plant. These dwarf breeds are typically half the size of regular Butterfly Bushes, perfect for those who don’t want to sacrifice a lot of space. For maximum flower production they need full sun (sunny areas also are best for attracting butterflies) but will thrive in light shade. They typically grow 3-6 feet in an outside garden, 2-2.5 feet in containers and bloom early summer through fall. Butterfly Bush’s vibrant colors tend to gravitate towards the purple-pink end of the spectrum and include bright pink, magenta with contrasting golden eyes, cream, and lavender. For a pop of cheery color, sweet fragrance, and near guarantee of nectar sipping winged visitors this summer be sure to include the Butterfly Bush. Don’t forget to snip a few flowers for yourself to make a honey scented bouquet this year. Easy to Grow Bulbs has a great selection of the amazing Butterfly Plants.
