Peace activist Tom Keene presented his rules for dialogue at Tuesday s Hot Potato in the Methodist Student Center. In the lecture, Critical Thinking and Civility, Keene, a formerRanger, spoke about basic skills in critical thinking forprofessional and individual use. Among those skills, he listed listening carefully, understandingthe speaker in a conversation, showing the speaker you understandand honoring a relationship from the dialogue with the speaker The Rev. John Feagins , campus minister at the Methodist Student Center, said, The goalof Hot Potato is to encourage critical thinking. Feagins told the audience to question anything and with critical thinking,people help themselves and others around them. Keene said he decided to enlist in the Korean War for the purposeof defending South Korean and American democracy, but realized 20years later how it was a set-up. On returning to Phoenix from war on the Korean peninsula, he saidseeing news of the civil rights movement interested him inorganizing for peace. Keene pushed attendees of the lecture to critical thinking withexamples designed to show situations as just or unjust, fair orunfair and to make these judgments keeping one s values in mind. Dialogue establishes relationships, Keene said, adding dialog raisesconsciousness in both parties of a conversation. In many conversations, there is a competitor who wants to becorrect, while seekers try to understand the other person s pointof view. He said patience and emotion help a person become a seeker toacquire the power of understanding. Keene said there were some who had lost out on Manifest Destiny,when the U.S. expanded from 13 colonies in 1776 to the doubling ofthe nation with the Lousiana Purchase in 1803. Keene had groups of three in the entire audience engage in aconversation, with two speakers in doing the exercise of the rulesof dialog, along with an observer who spoke afterwards about howthe speaker communicated. Some participants of the conversation, including political scienceProfessor Asslan Khaligh , said the exercise made them feel closer to the listener. Next, Keene put six questions to attendees about justice: What ismy reality? Who decides my reality? Who benefits? Whopays? Given my reality, what do we want? Keene said rules are like brakes in a car: they were made so youcan stop, if it goes slow, you don t have to use it, and withoutthe use of the car brakes, the speed could become deadly.
