Urgent care is the medical evaluation and treatment of any health concern or problem that cannot or should not wait. Serious medical problems can develop when delaying treatment and demand immediate attention. Urgent care centers are there for you when symptoms simply become too much to handle or you injure yourself, but there are no possible ways to get same day. While you can’t warrant a trip to the hospital the urgent care, in most cases, are the best place to go for nonlife-threatening situations. Possible conditions that may prompt a visit to urgent care are: • Sprains • Wounds requiring stitches • Broken bones and minor cuts from accidents or falls • Mild asthma attacks • Minor infections. The biggest advantage of the urgent care is avoiding the emergency rooms of local hospitals where your minor problem may turn into a major waste of time and money. While emergency rooms can provide excellent care, the hassles that go along with going to the emergency room may not be worth the visit. Waiting times can be as long as 6 to 8 hours or longer due to the care being provided to patients in a more critical condition. ERS serve patients based on the severity of the problem and charge for access to their wide-ranging facilities. Often times, patients can be seen and treated in an urgent care clinic in less than an hour. Not only does this get you treated faster, but it also reduces the waits in ERs for those who may need their services more. The wait at urgent care centers are often times minimal and the cost for services can be one-fourth of what you would pay at a hospital or half the cost for a visit to your doctor. Even though these centers offer treatment at a fraction of the cost, they still carry all the necessary equipment capable of diagnosing and treating minor medical emergencies. The centers are also staffed by trained physicians, nurses, and assistant. Urgent care centers provide a range array of healthcare options and can provide basic care for non-life-threatening medical situations. Most can perform X-ray, lab work and dispense prescriptions. Urgent care centers are generally opened extended hours; although, they are not required to provide 24-hour emergency care. These centers are privately funded and have established set hours, but are more flexible in there hours than your regular doctor’s office. There are no appointments needed and walk-ins are welcomed. Although urgent care is good way to get fast medical treatments, it is important to still go to a nearby emergency room or call 911 if there are any life-threatening concerns.
