News TI announces OMAP 3 technology for easy access to home securitymonitoring (19/2/2009) Customers can monitor their homes from anywhere using a mobilephone or PC with a security gateway based on TI's OMAP(tm) 3technology M2M Solution's Homebox security gateway allows users to viewreal-time video, monitor security/safety sensors and takeappropriate action Security gateways, an entirely new class of security systems fromthe telematics system integrator M2M Solution (M2M), allow endusers to view real-time video of homes or commercial facilities ona mobile phone or PC, giving them full monitoring control andeliminating the need for expensive surveillance services. Thesebreakthrough devices can read data from motion or smoke detectors, scan the status of doors and windows and interact with individualsinside the monitored area to determine if they are intruders. Allthis is possible with the compact Homebox unit powered by theOMAP3503 processor and development infrastructure includingevaluation boards, software and services from Texas InstrumentsIncorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN), which allowed M2M to design thesystem in only nine months. M2M serves as a business-to-businesssupplier and develops complete security concepts, from hardware toongoing services, for major companies in the telecom, insurance andindustrial security fields. "TI provided a complete system level solution with theOMAP(tm) 3 applications processor, RF transceivers, audio codecsand power-management devices," explains Arnaud Duclap, chiefoperating officer, M2M Solution. "Additionally, the TIdevelopment tools and Linux board-support package allowed us tosave time and money using open source codecs for MPEG-4 and H.263,so we were able to modify our base concept to meet unique customerrequirements." TI's OMAP3503 processor with its 600 MHz ARM(r) Cortex(tm)-A8 coreprovides all the computational power and I/O needed to run thisunobtrusive appliance, which measures just 14 x 14 x 8 cm. The unitfeatures a built-in 5MP camera that works in low light with a140-degree angle that also accepts signals from WiFi cameras. Theprocessor then transcodes camera data so users can watch real-timeimages optimized for their mobile phones or PCs. Other integrated I/O includes Ethernet for a hardwired link to abroadband router, GSM for homes or facilities not equipped with abroadband connection or as a backup to a wired connection, WiFi forexternal cameras and broadband routers, plus an 868 MHz RF link tovarious security/safety sensors and even external sirens. Futurefeatures will take advantage of the Homebox's Bluetooth and Zigbeeports. With OMAP 3 technology implementing all these interfaces, theHomebox will typically only need one cable connection - power.Because of the low power consumption of the OMAP 3 processor, lessthan 1W in this case, all functions are housed in a plasticenclosure that operates silently without any fans or even heatsinks. This low power consumption is also important if an intrudercuts off the power supply. In this situation, a backup battery runsthe Homebox for four hours so it can send an intrusion alert, either with an e-mail message, text message, MMS or voice recordedcall, and then respond to the owner's instructions. In addition, recordings of audio/video data are sent to the service provider'sserver bank so they cannot be permanently destroyed by an intruder. The Homebox is already adopted by several customers, such asMYXYTY, who is introducing a home security gateway system for theconsumer market. Leveraging the Homebox technology and performanceof the OMAP35x processor, MYXYTY's new system will have securityportals to monitor vehicles, children, seniors and even petswearing special collars. "M2M has done a great job adapting our technology so they canbreak cost barriers and create a first-of-its-kind home securitygateway that is exceptionally powerful, yet one that almost anyonecan afford," comments Elizabete de Freitas, DSP Catalogbusiness development manager, TI. "The high level ofintegration in the OMAP 3 processor results in a lower total billof materials for the Homebox and M2M can quickly upgrade to morepowerful OMAP 3 processors to add new features and tune systems tomatch the particular requirements of every customer."
