Though best known for the versions created with tiny, square tiles, mosaic art can be made from any design based on gluing many tiny, colored pieces to a flat surface. Though a mosaic can require a good deal of skill and many hours of complex processes, it can also be quick, yet still impressive. You can create your own basic mosaic projects using common art supplies and household items and get a professional-looking result. Bottle Cap Mosaic Collect colorful bottle caps from beverage bottles and give them a good wash. Use needle-nosed pliers to remove the rubber, semi-opaque discs lining the insides of the bottles so that you can glue them with their tops down and avoid making any logos or printing part of your design (they'll also be easier to glue). Use hot glue or a tacky wood glue to affix the caps to a foundation of plywood, thick cardboard (not corrugated) or masonite. This type of craft works well for creating abstract or geometric pattern designs rather than images. Use large caps of a single type and color to make the main design, then fill in the rest of the mosaic with smaller caps. Seed Bead Mosaic Tiny, colorful seed beads are versatile enough for use in creating mosaic images with fine detail, but without any need to match up oddly-shaped items. Create a line drawing of the image you want on cardboard (or print the image from a computer and paste the paper in place), then label each section of the image with the color you want, using your seed bead collection as a guide. Use a paint brush and tacky craft glue to fill the sections with beads one at a time, painting the glue in place, pouring the beads to coat it, then letting it dry before you go on to the next section. Broken Ceramic Mosaic Broken ceramic pieces have a beautiful, interesting look that make for an attractive mosaic project even if you aren't trying to arrange them into a specific image or pattern. Purchase old ceramic wares from places like garage sales or thrift stores, then break them into pieces by placing them in an old pillow case and striking with a hammer (this will control shards for safety). Re-assemble the pieces on a flat surface like a wall, a kitchen tray or an unfinished counter top using a strong epoxy, then fill in the cracks between the pieces with cement or heavy-duty plaster. Bean Mosaic Purchase dried beans in different colors and sizes and use them to create a mosaic in a manner similar to the seed bead art, outlining the image, then applying glue to one section at a time. With beads, also consider the arrangement of the angle of the beads; you can either toss them on the glue bed and let them lay as the fall, or arrange the beads one by one to make neat-looking rows. Jelly Bean Mosaic Create a jelly bean mosaic for permanent decoration just as you would a dried bean mosaic. Spray the finished product with a polyeurethane fixative to preserve the sugars. Alternately, use jelly beans to create an edible mosaic to decorate a large sheet cake for special occasions; spread a thin layer of white frosting, then outline the design in thin, dark lines of frosting before filling in with the jelly beans.
