A good betta fish owner knows what to do when the pet becomes ill. You need to educate yourself on the possible diseases and what steps you can take to care properly for your sick betta fish. Search online and you will be able to gather a lot of useful resources. Eyes If the eyes of your pet appear cloudy, it could be due to an infection or possible wounds. This could be treated by replacing the tank water with fresh and clean one. Add antibiotic to the water too. If the eyes are swollen and are protruding, your pet probably has Popeye that can be treated with antibiotic. Gills If the operculum or the lid covering the gills is partially open, it could be suffering from gill hyperplasia or parasite irritation. This disease can be confirmed if the creature also shows labored or rapid breathing. Clean its water and then add aquarium salt and use an anti-parasitic. If the gills are discolored or excessively red in color, physical wounds may be present or also gill hyperplasia. If you can see stringy discharge or abnormal growths, it may have overactive coat of slime. Replace tank water, add antibiotic and reduce the water temperature. Fins If the tips of the fins are bloody or blackened, fin rot might be present. You need to clean the water. If the fins are losing tissues or if they appear ragged, fin rot due probably to biting is present. Clean the water, use antibiotics and reduce any possible cause of stress for the fish. Head If the color has changed, the fish could be showing aging signs and if caused by an illness, the treatment normally varies. Body Like the fins, its body could also show some blackened tissues that could be due to fungus. Clean the water and use anti-fungal/antibiotic treatment. If the abdomen is bloated, it could be dropsy or constipated; thus, you need to adjust its diet, clean the water, use antibiotic and Epsom salt. If there are open sores and cuts, physical wounds might be present. Clean the water and use antiseptic. If there are bronze or gold dustings, velvet parasites might be affecting it so use anti-parasite treatment. If there are horizontal stripes, the fish might be stressed so reduce possible causes of stress like loud noise and jostling. Lumps on the body might be due to tumor while missing scales could be due to physical wounds. The tank water must be cleaned and added with antiseptic. Behavior If it loses appetite and is sluggish, it is stressed. If it cannot swim upright, it must be constipated or suffering from swim bladder disorder. Clean the water; adjust its diet and use Epsom salt and antibiotics. If there is lack of defecation in the water, it might again be constipated. If the waste of your fish appears white and stringy, it could be due to internal parasites so use anti-parasitic treatment. If it swims jerkily, it could be irritated by a parasite or exposed to toxins. Clean the aquarium and replace the water with a fresh batch.
