Living in a house rather than an apartment has so many advantages. It’s great to be able to park your car in the garage, know that your kids are playing safely behind a fence, not be bothered by noisy neighbours in the next room, keep pets without risking eviction, entertain guests on the patio, and be close to nature with a beautiful garden and trees in the yard. The problem is, how many of us are green thumbs or have the time to try to be one? Despite our best intentions for our yard when we first move into a house, most of us tend to leave it untended. Our lives are so busy with work and kids and school schedules and socializing that we usually don’t spend any time in the garden until we are retired. Our yards can get into such a mess and it seems like the work never ends. Taking care of the yard and flower beds is a year round job. Spring time usually requires a lot of pruning since the chill of winter tends to kill many branches. This can be a tedious job and usually results in plenty of splinters and prickles. It’s almost like the trees are laughing at your efforts. Honestly, who actually has time to clean up after the trees when we’re already constantly cleaning up after our kids and teenagers? Of all the seasons, winter is by far the most back-breaking when it comes to cleaning up the yard. Shovelling the drive is such strenuous work and it seems like the work is never complete. It can also be dangerous quite dangerous, especially when the walkway becomes slippery with ice. Gone are the good old days when a kid from down the street would knock on the door and ask if he could do any yard work for a little extra cash. Now, there are insurance issues involved in allowing anyone to work on your property as well as child labour laws. Not only this, very few parents allow their children to knock on their neighbours’ doors nowadays, out of fear of kidnapping or paedophilia.
