The stone fireplace is a room centerpiece that represents both warm and pastoral charm. Although stone fireplaces have been around since the days of old, they have definitely moved into modern times with much flair. By design, stone fireplaces are usually the strongest element in the room. The key to decorating a stone fireplace is to play up its strengths without detracting from the beauty of the stone. Homeowners armed with good common sense and some understanding of some of the basic principles of decorating stand the best chance of creating a beautiful fireplace display. Instructions as follows: Firstly, look at the theme of the décor already in the room. Fireplace decorations should not clash with what's already in the room. Make your decorating plan from that. Secondly, decorate the upper stone walls of the fireplace, the hearth and the mantle for the best decorating results. Decorating elements that are seen on the mantle should be repeated in those on the hearth. Thirdly, hang items such as wreaths or tapestries on the wall above the mantle. These look best when displayed 2 to 3 feet above the mantle, right at the center point. Fourthly, consider mantle covers or table runners that have been converted to fit the mantle to bring the shower room's theme colors to the fireplace. Fifthly, create a homey feel to your fireplace by decorating with books. Coffee table books, leather bound or faux leather bound books, or fancy children's books add flair when they're placed on the mantle or the hearth. Haphazard, rather than orderly, placement gives the place the feel of home. Sixthly, wine bottles, antique perfume bottles and even fancy oil bottles make great accessories for the slate fireplace. Look for bottles with pretty labels, interesting cuts in the glass or cool bottle adornments. These make great mantle centerpieces but can be placed anywhere. Seventhly, go for items such as dried fruit, pumpkins and garland for the shabby chic look. These items are throwback from a time when hearth and home meant cooking over an open fire. They also add splashes of color without being over the top. Eighthly, display family photos and your child's framed school art projects. Line them up on the mantle to create a visual timeline or mix up the look by placing decorative candle holders, silk grape vines and baby's breath for a cozy look. Ninthly, accessorize with firewood or fireplace tool holders. Purchase these items ready-made or create your own from large baskets. Place some of the mantle's decorative objects such as photos or perfume bottles to tie together the look. Tips & Warnings One of the principle elements of design is the rule of grouping. Items that go together are usually grouped together. By grouping together items and leaving some empty space around them, you create a focal point on your fireplace.
