Tourism competitiveness is an important economic indicator. It is a major element in economic stimulation packages. In addition, tourism is among the largest employers in most countries and also a fast-lane vehicle into the workforce for young people and women. Encouraging travel boosts consumer and business confidence; it strengthens two-way trade and promotes export income. One good way to measure the tourism competitiveness is the by global Tourism Rankings. The UNWTO Statistics and Tourism Satellite Account Programme is committed to developing tourism measurement for furthering knowledge of the sector, monitoring progress, evaluating impact, promoting results-focused management, and highlighting strategic issues for policy objectives. The World Tourism Rankings are compiled by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) as part of their World Tourism Barometer publication, which is released three times throughout the year. In the publication, UN regions and sub regions are ranked by the number of international visitor arrivals, by the revenue generated by inbound tourism, and by the expenditures of outbound travelers. For example, Greece in the Tourism Ranking ranks 32nd among 140 countries in the world in attracting visitors and for hospitality, falling three places from 2011 in the survey Reducing Barriers to Economic Growth and Job Creation by the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report, which rates the quality of country’s travel and tourism industry. A new report on global tourism from the World Economic Forum (WEF) has compiled a list of which countries welcome travelers and which are not so tourist-friendly. The Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2013 examines 140 countries based on attractiveness and competitiveness in the travel and tourism industry. Iceland, New Zealand and Morocco took the top three spots in the Tourism Ranking, respectively, while Bolivia, Venezuela and Russia were found to be the most-unfriendly nations toward vacationers. Iceland ranked 16th overall in Tourism Ranking, while New Zealand came in 12th. The list ranked nations from 0 (very unwelcome) to 7 (very welcome), using factors including tourism infrastructure such as transportation and attractions, preservation and development of natural resources, business travel appeal and safety.
