People sometimes wonder, “Should I write a letter to my child?” This idea can come about for a variety of different reasons and can often be a good idea. People can write a letter for many different reasons or at different stages of life. Some people like this idea because it allows them to say things that they might have difficulty saying in person. To make amends Parents do not receive an instruction book when children are born. This can make them raise their children in a way that may be too harsh, too lenient or somehow ineffective. Many will try to follow how their parents raised them. Later on, the parents may realize that they did somethings that were really wrong and they want to make amends for it. Other parents may have battled substance abuse but are now in recovery. These parents may have used drugs or alcohol, or both, and more or less were lousy parents. Now that they are in recovery, they realize the value of trying to make amends to people they have harmed. This is especially true for those working a 12-step program. These parents may want to write more than one letter as they discover more about what has gone on to impact their children as a result of their chemical dependency. To work on a current issue Some parents find it easier to say things in writing than in person. Often the parent and child cannot work on issues or problems without getting into a heated exchange. Being able to put things in writing can defuse these kinds of situations. Writing things down also gives people a chance to make sure that their wording is more easily understood but also not threatening, angry or spiteful. To support a child that is growing up Teens and preteens are particularly vulnerable to peer pressure and have the added bonus of discovering who they really are during these years. Teens are sometimes influenced by others and can be involved in situations that they may not be ready for emotionally. Teens can also be the victims of bullying. During these years, teens have to make choices about which friends to hang out with, how to spend free time, whether to continue school through college, and which people to become romantically involved with. Each choice will have subcategories to deal with too. Parents will not want to give teens carte blanche to do everything and anything that is offered during these years. They may want to know that they love their child unconditionally. To know more about a letter to my child, please visit us on our website.
