Are our primary school math standards too high? RazorTV picked three Primary 3 math questions from an assessmentbook and posed them to adults on the street. Should be a breeze, right? Not quite. "Difficult", "very tough", and "noclue" were some of the responses from the adults, who alsothought the questions were more suited for pupils in Primary 6 andsecondary school. Primary school math is obviously not what it used to be. One concerned parent recently wrote in to the newspapers tocomplain about the unrealistic standards.
The parent said, "I have yet to observe any beneficial effectsof pushing children so hard in primary school, apart from highstress levels and sapping of intellectual curiosity. However some might argue that there is nothing wrong with setting ahigh standard. After all, the Singapore education system has beenpraised especially for this. In the Wall Street Journal article, "Education Is the Key to aHealthy Economy", published last week, it was revealed that asscores for math assessment tests rise, so does economic growth. Comparing different countries around the world, Singapore andTaiwan were at the top.
"I think nowadays kids are smarter so they shouldn't have aproblem doing these questions," said one of the adultsinterviewed. Having higher educational standards would also beimportant for Singapore's future, he said. Kennise Lee, a Primary 3 student, said she found the question easy. But Kennise said she did not encounter such questions during mathclass in school, which mainly covered subtraction, addition,multiplication and division. Instead she learnt them at her maths tuition class, which taughther how to use abacus and fingers to solve problem sums of thisnature.
While some parents complain that the high level of math takes thefun out of learning, others argue that it is necessary to maintainhigh educational standards. But as Kennise showed us, perhaps it is just the adults who findthe math problems challenging and expectations have to be adjustedas the years go by.
