One of the things a Premio owner usually overlooks when washing his or her car is the Toyota Premio’s exhaust system. Perhaps because it is not easily seen and we only take not of it during emissions tests—still, this is no excuse not to pay attention to it, especially the muffler. The muffler is the part of the Premio that is responsible for canceling out noise and expelling exhaust. Maintaining the muffler is important because it makes sure your car performs better and last longer. A car’s exhaust system is usually made up of a tailpipe, a center section, a catalytic converter, and a front pipe. The muffler is connected to the tailpipe. Vehicle exhaust will dirty up the muffler, and though most car mufflers are disposable, you still have to make sure that your vehicle’s muffler and tailpipe are clean. Hosing water inside the muffler is a no-no—cleaning the interior with water may cause rust or corrosion—but there are ways to clean the muffler’s exterior which are guaranteed to lengthen its life. You can also clean the tailpipe or exhaust tip but be careful about letting water stand inside. To make your muffler and tailpipe look like new, you will need a pair of latex gloves, dry rags or lint-free cloths, water, two buckets, a sponge or scrubbing pad (one that won’t scratch metal), dishwashing soap, a microfiber towel, and metal polish. First, you need to remove as much excess dirt and grime from the Toyota Premio exhaust system (particularly the muffler’s exteriors and tailpipe) as possible to lessen the dirt you have to clean later. Put on your gloves and with a dry rag wipe off the soot from the muffler and exhaust tip. If you’re asthmatic or are prone to allergies, you may also want to wear a dust mask. Next, mix a teaspoon of dishwashing soap or grime remover with a bucket of warm water. Fill another bucket with clean water—you’ll use this as a rinsing bucket. Dip another rag into the bucket with the cleaning solution and proceed to wash the muffler’s exterior. Rinse off the rag in the rinsing bucket before dipping it again in the cleaning solution. Stubborn stains can be cleaned with a scrubbing pad, but make sure you scrub lightly so as not to damage the muffler’s metal surface. If some dirt remains, mix a new, more concentrated solution and get a new rag to clean the muffler with. Technically, you’re done cleaning the most exposed parts of your Toyota Premio’s exhaust system. It is not unusual for mufflers and tailpipes to look dull, especially after months of not being cleaned. To bring back your muffler’s shine, it you can apply polish on it. Make sure that the exterior and tip have completely dried; use a dry rag to wipe and pat these surfaces dry. Use an old microfiber towel or any soft cloth to apply the metal polish. Rub the polish with a steady, not-too-heavy pressure until the surface is shiny. The polish will help restore the muffler and tailpipe’s sheen and prevent it from dirtying quickly. Those are the basic steps you need to do to clean the exterior surfaces of the muffler and tailpipe. To make sure your Toyota Premio’s exhaust system always functions smoothly, have your car checked by an accredited Toyota service center.
