by Tamara Girard A veterinary technician, also known as a vet tech, is a critical member of an animal care team. In the field of veterinary medicine, veterinarians rely on vet techs to perform many duties that are critical to the care of an animal. Triage Whether in a human or animal emergency situation, triage is the first and one of the most critical tasks performed. When an animal enters the animal health center or animal hospital for care, a vet tech may conduct the initial evaluation of the patient. This may include quickly taking the animal’s vital signs, assessing their condition and providing initial medical treatments and collecting and performing patient histories. The vet tech communicates this critical information to the veterinarian and is part of the patient’s medical treatment plan. Medical Procedures Veterinary technicians are trained in the use and application of medical instruments and medical procedures. Vet techs routinely place catheters and intravenous lines in animals, collect biological samples, and may take x-rays and ultrasound images. Anesthesia Anesthesia Veterinary Technology specialists provide anesthesia to animal patients when needed for surgical or medical procedures. Vet techs in this career provide care for animal patients during and after surgical procedures, evaluating vital signs and evaluating any potential reactions to anesthesia. While specialized training is required, vet techs who are not anesthesia technology specialists perform critical tasks in preparation for surgery, including preparing the surgical suite and surgical equipment and tools. Surgery While specialized training is required, some veterinary technicans who are certified veterinary surgical technicans perform some animal surgical procedures. Vet techs who are not certified surgical technicans are also critical members of the veterinary surgical team. Vet techs may assist the Veterinarian before, during and after surgical procedures. This may include preparing the surgical suite and surgical equipment, providing assistance to the veterinarian during the procedure and providing post-operative care to the patient. Education In most animal care settings, a vet tech has substantial interaction with animals and their human owners. Vet techs often spend a great deal of time educating families on the proper care of their pet and serving as a resource for additional information. The field of veterinary technology offers the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of animals every day. By working to improve the lives of animals and strengthen their relationships with their human owners, veterinary technicians enjoy a high level of job satisfaction.
