How Long Will My Carpet Last? In 1949, the oldest known surviving carpet in the world was found in the grave of a Scythian prince in the mountains of Siberia. Called the Pazyryk Carpet (after the Pazyryk Valley where it was found), it is approximately 9' x 6.5', with a deep red central field and images of deer, horsemen, and whatnot in the borders. Radiocarbon shows that it was woven in the 5th century BC. Discoverer Sergei Rudenko believed the Pazyryk Carpet to be made by the Achaemenids (the tribes who founded the First Persian Empire). There is currently great debate over whether it is actually a product of the Achaemenids, or a nomadic product with Achaemenid influence, because this is how archaeological scholars spend their time. What is agreed is that the Pazyryk Carpet is about 2,500 years old. If Alexander the Great didn't walk on it, he was walking around somewhere when it was new. Well, that answer will vary depending on conditions, material, and the kind of use it will experience at your house. But look at it this way: it's a pretty good bet that the First Persian Empire was a high-traffic area.
