Today, women are turning to physiotherapy treatments in order to treat complications of breast cancer. Actually, what makes physiotherapy a desirable treatment method is that it involves just physical treatments with no or little use of equipment. This characteristic makes physiotherapy a highly desirable treatment method. A patient can get physiotherapy treatments, such as shoulder exercises and massage. As a matter of fact, these exercises and massage therapies are recommended to be used after the patients had an operation. Many a studies have been done so as to find out if physiotherapy can rid you of complications of cancer surgery. The great news is that the results of the studies were positive. Secondary lymph edema occurs when the lymphatic system gets damaged in a medical treatment. This condition may contribute to inflammation of the arm and retention of fluid. According to statistics, more than 70% patients suffer from anxiety, disfigurement, emotional distress, depression and other problems due to secondary lymph edema. In Spain, a physiotherapy professor at a university chose 120 females who received breast cancer surgery in order to get lymph nodes removed for an experiment. The professor divided the group in two groups: a control group and an intervention group. The intervention group was given education and physiotherapy. On the other hand, the control group was given education only. The programs ran for 3 weeks. The patients were contacted after 4 weeks of surgery. Again, they were contacted after 3, 6, and 12 months post-surgery. The physiotherapy treatments that were given to the patients included scar tissue massage, shoulder exercises, lymph drainage, among others. On the flip side, the education problem comprised material as to the lymphatic system along with advice about how to prevent infection and treat injuries. After the passage of 12 months, 7% and 25% of women in intervention group and control group got secondary lymphedema respectively. According to other findings of the researchers, the symptoms of secondary lymphedema appeared in control group 4 times earlier than in intervention group. More research should be done in order to find out it is beneficial to get physiotherapy treatments as soon as a woman gets surgery.
