Etta James was one particular of the greatest blues, jazz and soul singers in the 50s and 60s. In the age of 17 she created her breakthrough when "The Wallflower" topped the R chart. She had additional good results soon after signing to Chess Records: "All I Could Do Was Cry" was a minor hit, just before "At Last" reached No.2 on the R chart and No.22 in the pop chart. I found Etta James when I was a teenaged black girl developing up in Berkeley, California. I was too young for Muddy Waters, and Billie Holiday. Just before I was born,my parents fled segregated New Orleans for the wartime jobs of Oakland and San Francisco naval bases. I heard blues in the background of my life. From my aunt's honky-tonk piano playing towards the sexual innuendo of Significant Mama Thorton. I took it all in. This album captures just about every single bit in the innuendo of my life, either true or imagined.
I like the songs everybody loves, At Last, A Sunday Sort of Appreciate, Fool That am I, Trust in Me, All I Could Do is Cry. These songs speak truth to a woman's powerlessness. What I noticed right after playing this album more than, and more than, and more than is that she sounds like a horn, a sassy, jazzy blues horn. When she goes wanh, wanh, wanh, in Jimmy Reed's, Baby, What you need Me to complete, she may be the best vocal instrument. Any person who desires to meet Etta, must have this cd. It attributes several of her ideal loved tracks and songs that she is particularly associated with. Etta James was one particular of your most respected performers of her generation.
