Some bacteriologists work in research: for example, the details of the structure and development of a bacterium may be used to develop new drugs, and the testing of the new drugs for cancer and other diseases may produce information about how cells work. Much of the work is likely to be routine examination of specimens and meticulous record keeping. There are also opportunities in the National Health Service, the Blood Transfusion Service and public health laboratories as well as in the pharmaceutical, food, brewing, wool, cotton, dairy and leather industries which employ biological scientists and technicians on research work and production. Other openings, at home and overseas, occur from time to time in museums, technical libraries, agriculture and education. Qualifications and Training For research posts a good honours or preferably a higher degree is required. Degree entry requirements are two or three A level passes in biology, chemistry and another science or maths. (Usually GCSE or equivalent standard in maths and physics is required.) Technicians may enter at a variety of levels and there is a wide range of courses available depending on the qualifications already obtained. The usual course entry requirements are three or four GCSEs or equivalent. Subjects preferred are chemistry, biology. maths and a subject showing the use of English. Personal Qualities Biological scientists and technicians need to be patient, methodical and accurate. Details must he checked and experiments repeated to ensure absolute accuracy; the results must then he expressed clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing.
