Many visitors like to spend one or two days in the busy capital of Kathmandu before they attempt their Annapurna treks. The town has many impressive sights all of which needs to be explored while on your vacation. The holiday maker heart of Kathmandu is the Thamel district where you will find many cafeterias, bars and bistros. Here you can enjoy some toothsome Nepali cuisine, though it's possibly sensible to wait until you return from your Annapurna trek before too much overindulgence. Thamel is additionally a great place to pick up bargain keepsakes and any trekking gear you could need before setting off on your Annapurna trek, though maybe it is smart to leave the keepsakes until after your trek's finished as you do not want your back-pack to be too full. Taking a 40 minute walk from Thamel to up to Swayambhunath Church is a smart way to get some practice in before starting your Annapurna circuit trek. Nevertheless if you are looking to chill before starting your Annapurna trek then you might want to go by rickshaw to the respected Buddhist Stupa. Swayambhunath is among the most vital Buddhist monuments in the country and is commonly referred to by visitors as the monkey church, thanks to the massive number of monkeys which make their home in the grounds. If you like bats to monkeys then you may wish to visit the previous King's Palace ( now a museum ) prior to beginning your Annapurna trek. Though the palace is often modern looking, built in the second 1/2 the 19th century, the giant fruit bats which hang from the trees outside never fail to draw in foreign visitors. Try and visit the King's Palace just before nightfall when the giant bats flock en masse round the town square. Freak Street was a favored hippy destination in the 1960's and 1970's when overlanding tours were popular and Kathmandu was a major stop on the hippy trail. Nevertheless shops in this street still claim to sell everything from incense to enlightenment and the spaced out vibe makes it the ideal place to relax out before your Annapurna circuit trek. Next to Freak Street is Durbar Square, AKA Hanuman Dhoka, and an International Heritage Preservation Site. It's an engaging compound of flamboyantly carved churches, palaces and monuments including the old Royal Palace, where you can catch a glance of the living goddess or Kumari - a young girl selected as the manifestation of the Hindu goddess Durga. Rambling through the lovely buildings of Durbar Square provides a feeling of calm before the thrill of your Annapurna trek. Pashupatinath is another cultural must see in Kathmandu. It's a Hindu church devoted to Shiva, in his form as the Lord of animals. While only Hindus are able to enter the church grounds, non-Hindus can look at the church from the banks of the Bagmati Brook. The church is thought to be Lord Shiva's most holy church and you'll observe many cremations taking place next to the banks of the holy Bagmati Brook , while spiritual Sadhus carry out rites.
